This guide builds
on the original work by Oz Robinson and Anne Hammick. It covers
the Atlantic coast of the Iberian peninsula from Cabo Prior (El Ferrol) to
Gibraltar. It embraces the spectacular rias of Northwest Spain, an unrivalled and
easily accessible cruising ground for yachtsmen, and the flat, exposed coast of Portugal
which has recently seen an improvement in available shelter. South of Cabo de São
Vicente, the Algarve and the coast of Spain west of Gibraltar have a different feel and
here the Moorish and eventually the Mediterranean influence is felt. It is this
section of coast that has seen the most rapid growth in facilities for yachts since this
pilot was first published in 1988.
Each of these areas is backed by rich and
varied scenery which is often best seen from the coast and within easy reach are some of
Europes most historic towns and cities (Santiago de Compostela, Porto, Lisboa, Sevilla, Cadiz and
Gibraltar).
Martin Walker recced the whole coastline
from El Ferrol to La Guardia in August 2005 for this 5th edition. The text has been meticulously
revised, the aerial photography has been updated and all the plans have been redrawn to a
full colour specification. The photo updates above are recent and should be
considered when cruising this area.
Atlantic Spain and Portugal is an
essential companion for yachtsmen making the passage from northwest Europe to the
Mediterranean. It covers the major jumping-off ports for an Atlantic crossing and also provides guidance for
the increasing number of yachts cruising the area and on passage to the Mediterranean.
The pilot
has 200 photographs taken from both the air and sea level plus the photo album above.
