Thousands of yachtsmen visit
the Channel Islands, either to cruise or to seek a pleasant haven en route between England
and France; however, mindful of the strong tides and currents, comparatively few explore
off the beaten path. Those that do, have the chance to exercise their pilotage skills (or
make full use of local expertise) and are rewarded with fascinating and fast-changing
seascapes and interesting anchorages away from the tourist bustle.
The origins of this book go back to the work of Malcolm Robson who generously gave
copyright of his pilot books to the RCC Pilotage Foundation with the request that they be
revised as necessary. Nick Heath initially rose to the challenge and produced his book in
1997. Peter Carnegie lives on Jersey and knows these islands well. He has repeatedly
sailed and flown the islands and has recorded not just the main passages but, in
conjunction with local experts, has worked the tides to travel and identify the more
remote routes. His text is enhanced by his own carefully positioned photographs from the
sea and the air and the plans have been updated to WGS84. In this new edition full use is
made of waypoints given to support descriptions of transit.

About the
Author:
Peter Carnegie discovered sailing on settling in Jersey in
1963. Early ventures in small sailing boats convinced him that the Channel Islands have
something special to offer aspiring yachtsmen and in 1976 he co-founded Jersey Cruising
School. Through years of intensive sailing in the area, mostly as Instructor and charter
skipper, he has gained an intimate knowledge of its harbours and anchorages. This forms
the basis of his RCC Pilotage Foundation pilot The Channel Islands. As a keen
pilot he has overflown all the harbours and anchorages described in The Channel Islands.
Many of the air views were taken by his son James, a professional photographer. Peter and
his wife Julia have brought their four children up in the sailing tradition, cruising as
far afield as Mediterranean and Caribbean waters. Their present yacht is a Jeanneau 42
based in St Helier.
