This third edition of Faroe, Iceland and Greenland contains
extensive revisions as well as improved information on the three areas that the pilot
covers. Much of this new data has been provided by Royal Cruising Club members who
have visited the area since the first edition was published. The author has drawn
heavily upon his notes and sketch charts to provide what is the only comprehensive
compendium of information on these cruising grounds in the northernmost part of the
Atlantic Ocean.
Faroe, Iceland
& Greenland are linked by history. These are the lands of the Sagas and the
Norse settlements 1000 years ago. While the Norse culture and language are still
alive and well in Faroe and Iceland, only fascinating evidence remains of the Norse
settlements in Greenland. These died out in the 15th Century, to be
replaced now by a small but vibrant modern Danish/Inuit population. Each
area is totally different in character, but all share long daylight hours in summer.
In common, are a friendly people as well as challenging and rewarding
sailing.
The information on Faroe and Iceland
was originally compiled by Christopher Thornhill and that of Greenland by John Gore Grimes
and Willy Ker.
Over the last three years, Willy
Ker has revisited most of the harbours and anchorages in Faroe and Iceland and cruised
both the East and West Coasts of Greenland.
About the present Author:-
Willy
Ker has been ocean racing and cruising under sail since 1948. He first sailed to the Faroe Islands in the
family Contessa 32 Assent in 1982 and circumnavigated Iceland in 1983. Since then Assent has cruised both the East
and West coasts of Greenland a number of times, as well as the East coast of Baffin Island. Between 1991 and 1995, Assent sailed
to the Antarctic Peninsula and across the Pacific to Alaska and Eastern Russia, returning
via the Great Lakes to the Eastern Seaboard and Labrador. Faroe, Iceland and Greenland have all been
revisited more than once since. Originally
trained as a topographical surveyor, hydrography is now his hobby. He is a Fellow of the
Royal Institute of Navigation.
