In memoriam: Professor Dr Stephan Strobel

We are deeply saddened to announce the death of Professor Dr Stephan Strobel, MD PhD, MRCP(Hon), FRCP, FRCPCH, a much-respected author, sailor, and long-time supporter of the Pilotage Foundation.

After retiring on health grounds 17 years ago, Stephan and his wife Madeleine devoted themselves to their shared passion for sailing aboard their Bowman 40, Easy Rider. Their extensive cruising throughout European waters - always with a view to remaining within reach of medical care - was a source of deep fulfilment.

From this experience came two editions of the highly regarded Corsica and North Sardinia pilot, which Stephan and Madeleine co-edited. Published by Imray in collaboration with the Pilotage Foundation, the book is widely valued for its clarity, detail, and insight - qualities that reflect the authors' deep knowledge and care.

Beyond his life at sea, Stephan had a distinguished academic and medical career in paediatric and clinical immunology. He was internationally recognised for his pioneering work on oral tolerance and food allergies - research that shaped understanding and treatment of allergic and autoimmune conditions. He authored over 200 peer-reviewed papers, cited more than 8,800 times, and co-edited the acclaimed Great Ormond Street Handbook of Paediatrics, once described by the British Medical Association as "the best paediatric book".

Royal Cruising Club Pilotage Foundation Director, James Eaton shares his thoughts: “On behalf of everyone at the Pilotage Foundation, we are deeply saddened by the loss of Stephan. He was a pleasure to work with - thoughtful, generous, and deeply committed to sharing his knowledge for the benefit of fellow sailors. His work on the Corsica and North Sardinia pilot, co-authored with Madeleine, has helped countless cruisers navigate these beautiful but complex waters with greater confidence and safety. We are profoundly grateful for his contribution. Stephan’s intelligence, quiet dedication and kind spirit will be greatly missed, and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege to know him.”
